PhD position in Epigenetics and Stem Cell Biology

We are recruiting a highly motivated PhD student who wants to pursue fundamental research on chromatin-based mechanisms of gene regulation and transposon silencing.

Our group at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Tumorbiology (IMT) of the Philipps-University in Marburg combines biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, including epigenome technology (ChIP, CRISPR, RNA-seq and bioinformatics), to dissect the epigenetic basis of cell identity and understand its mis-regulation in diseases. We are associated with a transregional, collaborative chromatin research network (DFG TRR81; Bad Nauheim, Giessen, Marburg, Rotterdam) aimed at obtaining a deep molecular understanding of chromatin changes in Differentiation and Malignancies.

The Project:

Heterochromatin is critical for chromosome function and genome stability. It ensures accurate chromosome segregation, restrains the activity of mobile elements and restricts lineage inappropriate gene expression. The successful candidate will determine the biological role and molecular mechanisms of an ATP dependent chromatin remodelling complex in these processes using mouse embryonic stem cells and their differentiated derivatives as model systems. For details refer to our recent publication (Nature communications 2019) and website: http://www.imt.uni-marburg.de/mermoud/index.php

Benefits:

+ The IMT pursues an excellent research program and has a top-notch infrastructure with access to state of the art core facilities.

+ The successful candidate will take part in a Training Program and obtain optimal support to develop strong research and soft skills which will help to achieve their scientific and career goals.

+ The Mermoud lab has an excellent track record of past students who have published well, allowing them to move on to internationally renowned labs.

+ Being part of a thriving academic and social community in Marburg, an attractive student town in the heart of Germany.

+ The Philipps-University promotes equal opportunity and provides a friendly, dynamic working environment.

+ The position is paid in accordance to DFG rates and is available immediately.

What we are looking for:

Required are a Masters Degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Cell biology, Molecular Biology (or similar subjects), and a research background. Previous lab experience is essential and proficiency in bioinformatics or chromatin biology an advantage.

To apply:

Applicants should send their application by the 19 th of August 2019 as a single PDF, including cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of referees to mermoud(at)imt.uni-marburg.de.
