The Institute of Molecular Biology is inviting applications for a tenure-track-like position as Assistant Professor in Digital Biology with integration into the newly established Digital Science Center of the University of Innsbruck. Research activities at the Institute of Molecular Biology involve unveiling complex molecular, cellular and organismal systems, using high-throughput big data technologies and high-performance computational approaches, employing state-of-the-art human cell reprogramming and differentiation technologies, disease modeling and developmental biology. We are seeking a new research group leader to join us in this exciting effort.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program with a focus on pattern recognition of dynamic, multidimensional processes to assess disease-related trajectories, and the development and validation of machine learning applications in life science. A strong commitment to high-quality research-led teaching in the fields of bioinformatics, genomics, metabolomics and related fields, as well as the supervision of bachelor and master students and technical staff is expected. The research and teaching activities will involve interdisciplinary cooperation with the Digital Science Center, and the candidate will further be expected to secure external funding and participate in academic administration.
Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, biomedicine, medicine, or a related field. Moreover, the applicants must have accomplished postdoctoral training or relevant professional experience documented by scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals and talks at international conferences or workshops. The applicant is furthermore expected to have independent and interdisciplinary research experience involving bioinformatics and ‘omics’ technologies. Applicants must have outstanding team and communication skills, and experience in securing external funding and in managing research projects. Mobility experience and international collaborations are desired.

Embedded within the Central European Alps, the University of Innsbruck is the largest University of the Austrian state Tyrol and consistently ranks amongst the top 3 Universities in Austria. The Digital Science Center at the University of Innsbruck is a cross-disciplinary initiative and currently recruits 13 Assistant Professor team leaders interconnected from across several disciplines. The goal of this ambitious initiative is to foster the University’s leading role in digital research excellence. Candidates across all fields are expected to have an established research focus in the development or application of computational tools and technologies that are beyond the state-of-the-art in their respective fields.
Information on the position
The successful candidate will be offered a 6-year position as independent junior group leader (University Assistant/Assistant Professor) within the Institute of Molecular Biology according to the Austrian regulations on “Qualifizierungsvereinbarung (QV)”. The QV is a transparent and internationally highly competitive tenure track-like system. Successful candidates are initially hired as ‘University Assistants’ and immediately develop their individual tenure criteria (qualification agreement) together with their Institutes within the first few months. As soon as these tenure criteria are set and agreed, the candidates immediately transition into Assistant Professor positions. Final evaluation typically takes place following 5-6 years in order to evaluate the candidates’ success to progress into an Associate Professor position with a permanent contract.

The minimum gross salary (stipulated by collective agreement) for this position amounts € 3,804 per month (14 times per year).
